Wiring the base of the tree onto the pot is mainly for larger trees to help maintain stability. As long as you’re able to secure the wire around the root ball you shouldn’t have any issues. Make sure to not stab to wire directly into the roots as you could damage them.

The ratio of akadama can be adjusted based off what other additives you have in the soil. Akadama is great for retaining moisture in the soil, without having the roots sitting in water. A 1:10 ratio of soil to akadama will work well, but you could increase the amount of akadama if you wanted to have a lighter and airier mix. The better draining your soil mix is it will help promote new root growth.
